WHANGPOO COLLISION TUG BLAMED FOR DISASTER
Shanghai, Jan. 20. The Tungchi Steamship Company, operators of the Chikiang, have issued a statement blaming the tug for the collision which sank the ship on Saturday in the Whangpoo River, with the loss of 100 lives. The company alleges that the tug fled without offering assistance to the ship’ stricken passengers, and that the Chikiang’s captain jumped overboard in a futile attempt to force the tug to turn round and pick up survivors. The Shanghai District Court has announced that it will investigate the disaster. The Navigation Bureau has banned further transportation of passengers in steamers with wooden hulls. Bureau officials said the Chikiang’s capacity was 300, but she carried more than 1000 people. RUMOURS OF SOBOTAGE Recd. 12.10 am. Athens, Jan. 21. The Prime Minister (M. Tsaldaris) said rumours about the disaster to the Heimara were circulating on Saturday night, 12 hours before the ship went down.
