The Wanganella hard and fast on the rocks of Bar rett’s Reef, at the entrance to Wellington Harbour.
Fortunately, the weather was calm when the Wan ganella struck the reef, and the task of getting the passengers off began shortly after dawn, all being got ashore by 8.45 a.m. The harbour ferry steamer Cobar was used extensively to take passengers ashore, but the first to be taken off were got ashore by the Wellington Harbour Board’s pilot launch Arohina, shown in this picture alongside the stranded vessel, taking passengers aboard.
