LAST YEAR’S WINNERS MAKE A POOR START STONE’S WANGANUI FOUR WINS BY BIG MARGINS (Special) New Plymouth, Jan. 20 A feature of the Taranaki Bowling Centre's open fours tournament which opened at New Plymouth to-day was the failure of last year’s winning skip, W. L. Richdale (Gonville), to win either of the first two games of section play. The team, which consists of W. S. Corby, A. V. Martin, A. V. Merriman and Richdale, went down in the morning to M. J. Squire (Hawera), 23-16, and in the afternoon to W. Brownlee (Carlton), 24-17. Richdale was drawn in a strong section which includes such stalwarts as R. C. Boulton (West End, New Plymouth), four times winner of the tournament, and Squire, the notea Hawera exponent of the game and member of the winning four in 1942. Nine Wanganui teams, three from Feilding and one from Waitotara are among the competing fours. A Wanganui East four, skipped by E. Fletcher, won both games in their section, as did fours led by W. J. Stone (Wanganui). A. D. Tilley (Wanganui), and P. J. Mailman (Gonville), in their respective sections. Stone put up substantia! scores, defeating C. Hoskin (Hawera) 48-14 and S. Gilbert (Taumarunui) 31-16. Mailman had a narrow win over G. W. Peebles (Eltham) 26-23, but easily accounted for EX Currah (Whakatane) 36-13. J. S. Tingey (Feilding). W. Wenham (Feilding), G. Packer (Feilding), J. G. Verry (Waitotara), L. G. Walker (Wanganui), W. Rafne (Wanganui East) each won one game and lost one. Harris (St. John's) won one game to-day and lost one. The other St. John's rink (Johnston) lost both games. A record number of 138 teams are competing in the tournament. 79 from Taranaki clubs and 39 from clubs in other districts,. from Whangarei to Whakatane and Wellington. Section play is scheduled to be played on the last four days, two games ot 25 ends being played on each day.
