WAVERLEY’S FIRST SPELL
PIRATES CAME AWAY IN THE SECOND. The young Waveriey team, which is a scLd foundation on which to build for next year, had Pirates on the tun in the first spell of the early match cn Spriggens Park, but in the second had to stand up to a more or less true-to-form display by the blacks. Pirates were not at full strength in either forwards or backs—the two locks (Phizacklea and Humphrey) being on the sideline and also L. Head (first five-eighths). As has been the case in most of their games, the Waveriey forwards harrassed the opposition, nut was little finish to their backs. The teams were:— Pirates: N. Ahern; J. Smith, w. MePike, N. Anderson; F. Taunton J Bryers; R. Best; K. Parnell' S. Lee B. Pedley, W. Green, N. Brown, R Foster, D. Lind, O. Benson. Waveriey: H. Walker; R. Lupton, P. Hughes, G. Couchman; A. Alexander D. Aitken, D. Morrison; J Groshinski, F. Hills, H. Newland J H. pk.nson, A. Fairweather, B. Hone. R. Dallison, L. Hone. Referee: Mr. C. Gordon. The match was notable for two things, the deadly Waverlev tackling, and the fact that in J. Smith the blacks have an above-average goalkicker, a worthy understudy to Phizacklea. It was the devastating Pirates footrushes which got Waveriey down in th e end. Early in the match Alexander kicked a good goal from a penalty.— Waverlev 3, Pirates 0. Waveriey were penalised for shepherding and from a nosition some five yards inside half-way Smith kicked a
great goal.—Pirates 3, Waveriey That was five minutes before halftime. Waverlcy launched another attJCK and in a dire moment the blacks wore off-side, enabling Alexander to goal, making the scores Waverlev 6, Pirates 3, at half-time. The Pirates pack livened in the second spell. Best passed to Buyers and he scored, Smith converting.—Pirates 8, Waveriey 6. Loose foot rushes by the black forwards, Parnell leading, had the defence tied up. The black backs were sent away by Best for the best try of the mateli, F. Taunton cutting through in typical Rugby style to flash over the line. A try or two like that in a rep. match would aid Wanganui a great deal. Smith's kick failed.—Pirates n, Waveriey 6. R. Best was responsible for the final score of the game, potting a goal ten minutes before time was called.— Pirates 15, Waveriey 6.
