ELLERTON HALL WINS

MANAWATU HUNT CUP STEEPLES BLUE CHIPS SURPRISES IN MAIN FLAT RACE Following the two days’ racing neld by the Manawatu Racing Club, it was not surprising to find ine crowd at Awapuni on Saturday for the Manawatu Hunt Club's annual race meeting of smaller dimensions, though hunt enthusiasts were present from a wide area. Last year, with no clash of dates and large fields, the tolalisator handled a record of £63,482, so Saturday’s total of £62,887 10s, was really good under the circumstances. The weather was ideal for the greater part of the programme but rain fell just before the seventh race and set in heavily after the concluding event. The track was holding. STABLE-MATES FIRST AND SECOND. Backers preferred Ellerton Hal! 10 his stablemate, Golden Tide, in the Manawatu Punt Cup Steeples, and their judgment proved correct, tor the pair finished, as backed, first and second, though later the rider of Golden Tide, J. Fagan, was suspended tor .12 months for not riding his mount on its merits. Tiroroa was pulled up al ler go.ng nearly a mile, his rider losing his irons. Pnalaria made the pace inr a mil? ano a-half, half a dozen lengths in front of Ellerton Hall and Golden Tide, but. when Phalaria made a blunder at the sod-wall Ellerton J.aU jumped to the front, followed by Golden Tide. Thus they .ran over the concluding stages, Ellerton Hall winning by nearly three lengths from his stablemate, with Phalaria the oest part of a furlong back, and Glensevern following after another big gap. NEW PLYMOUTH-OWNED WINNER. The maiden steeplechase drew a field of eleven, the winner turning uo in Dualin, a Midian gelding who was having his first race in the colours of Mi. A. Vile, of New Plymouth. Penwilt, the favourite, crashed at the fourth obstacle, the hencoop, and broke his neck. Plain Boy led Oriental Lady and Dualin through the •••••••••••••••••••••••••I

'••••••••••••••••••••••••a straight, with Light Tea and Mokonui in close attendance, lhe remainder tailing off. Dualin ran up Io lake the lead at the half-mile, with Oriental Lady, Plain Boy, and Light Tea the only others in the picture, but Plain Boy lost his rider at the privet 'ence two furlongs from home, and Dualin came on to win by five lengths from Oriental Lady, with Light Tea seven lengths back. Midshioman. Battle March, and Rampant followed at long intervals. CONFIDENT JUMPER. Sovereign Lad proved himself a confident jumper in the Pukehou Hack Hurdles, tailing the field early while Gay Flame made the Dace and moving up to follow Foxada at. lhe half-mile, with Greek Dancer in close attendance. Greek Dancer was actually first into the straight but Sovereign Lad had his measure in the run to the judge. Foxada held on for third, ahead of Hard Rock and Namesake, but the favourite. Donegal Bay, was an inglorious last. TYPHOON DEFEATED. Backers cheerfully laid odds on Typhoon in the President’s Handicap, but the topweight found his 9.7 too much in the heavy going and he was beaten into fourth place, Blue Chips winning easily from Sir Bradbury and Gay Robe. Sir Boswell. Sir Bradbury. and Typhoon led from Leybourne and Blue Chips at the six furlongs but Blue Chips quickly ran to the front and was well of Sir Bradbury, Typhoon. Bay Robe, and Foxella into the straight. Blue Chips was able to hold on in the run ho’mc, and Sir Bradbury held off Bay Robe for second place, with Typhoon, unable to handle the going, a fair fourth. Then came Foxella and Queen’s Charm. COCK ROBIN ALL THE WAY.

The well-barked horses filled the places in the Tararua Hack Cup in the reverse order to backers’ preference, Cock Robin w.nning from Lord Darnl'w and Persuade. Cock Robin led all the way. He was clear of Lord Darnley and Persuade at the si - furlongs and held his advantage 11 I the straight, going on to win by thro? lengths from Lord Darnley, with Persuade a length away and Rickie ’nurth, followed I- Matawene and St. Nat. DEAD-HEAT IN LAST RACE.

Taiili. favourite for the concluding event, was never in the picture, and u was left to Pete? Theo and Newel Post to fight out the finish, the judge being unable to separate them. Peter Pheio jumped out smartly and was joined by Ever Aussie, the pair being trailed by Newel Pist. Gynee Lou ranged up with Peter Theio crossing lhe top. but it was left, to Newel Post to challenge the pacemaker, and Broughton got the Spiral colt up in the last str de to share the honour.?. Four lengths back was Sparkling Ladv, with Omaio and G.olden Acre next. MAIDEN STAKES DIVISION. The Kimbolton Maiden .'-fakes was run in divisions. The Otaki-trained

Broiefort mare Supreme won the first division handily, holding off a strong challenge from Airpier after leading into the straight with Merciful. King’s Sceptre was half a dozen lengths Penicillin, a two-year-old gelding "by Ringmaster from Midinette, won the second division handily, cutting down the pacemaker, Ko Iki, in the final furlong.
