MATCH WITH RUAPEHU ON SUNDAY. The Rangitikei senior Rugby representatives will play their fourth maten of the season tolmorrow (Sunday) when they make the long t.ip to Ohakune to play lhe Ruapenu SubUnion. Rangitikei’s record to date is lost to Wanganui, won from Oroua, and drew with Taihape. There have been two alterations in the Rangitikei learn. T. Kieiy, halfback, is no ionge? available to Rangitikei Rugby. He was a member of the Air Force, stationed ai Ohakea, and has now been “demobbed” and has returned to his homo town, Blenheim. Yesterday J. Hut‘on, one of the reserves, notified the selector that he was not available for the match. Had he gone to Ohakune he would probably have played full-back, and B. Holloway, the Ohingaiti half, would have taken up the position at the base of the scium. With Hutton's defection the selector has decided not to fill the halfback vacancy until after he has seen the Marton-Athletic senior game at Marton to-day. The Rangitikei team is: B. Holloway; J. U. Owing to the cricket ground being unfit for play for two games this afternoon, the Rugby Union has decided to play only one match, that between the A.T.C. and M.D.H.S. The other t hird grade match between the Ma’ton and Bulls teams has been postponed, and will be played at the end of the season if necessary. GAS POSITION ACUTE.

An appeal to consumers to conserve gas as much as possible during the week-end was made by the manage! of the Marton Gasworks. Mr. A. J. Holden, last evening. The quantity of coal in stock was exceedingly low and until further supplies were obtained. said Mr. Holden, he had no alternative but to cut off the supply of gas at certain periods during the week-end. He was not able to forecast when the next consignment of coal would reach Marton. “The gas position is going to be pretty difficult, this week-end,” added Mr. Holden. Gas would be shut off from 8.45 to 9.45 a.m. to-day (Saturday) and again in the afternoon from 3.45 to 4.45 p.rrk On Sunday afternoon it would be shut off for another hour from 1.30 to 2.30 p.m.

MOTOR REGISTRATION. Over 1400 motor vehicles had been registered at the Marton Post Office for the current year, said the postmaster, Mr. E. Eves, yesterday. This number included 800 motor cars, 310 light trucks, 120 heavy trucks, 95 tractors, 26 cycles and 50 other vehicles.

POINT-TO-POINT STEEPLECHASES.

The Rangitikei Hunt Club point-to-point steeplechases are to be held on Mr. L. H. S. Marshall's property, “Makoiti,” Fern Flats, Marton, on

Saturday, August 3. There are seven events on the programme, entries for which close on Monday, July 22, with the secretary, Miss F. L. Way, Marton. The programme includes a ladies' hunte.’ event, the Makoiti Steeplechase, of 2A miles, heavyweight handicap point-to-point of about two miles, handicap point-to-point steeplechase of 2i miles, a pony club event, a novelty event and a handy hunters' trial. Programmes have now been printed and are available at the secretory's office. Good trophies have been offered for all events. BOXING CHAMPS. NEXT WEEK. Boxing lans are now looking forward io the Wanganui jum/r boxing championships, winch are to be staged in the Civic Tneatre, Marton, pn Tuesday night. Matching was completed last Tuesday night, and the contestants are coming Lorn Wanganui, Taihape and Marlon. Owing to the length of the programme (there are to be some 20 bouts), the committee has decided lo start, the first fight at 7.30 p.m. sharp. AH the boys will be under 17 years of age. There are seven different classes, ranging from the mosquito-weight of under 6st,, to the welterweight of under 10.2. Reservations can now be made at Mogridge's for 4s. The admission charges are 4s and 2s, with children half price. REHA BI 1 STATION BU SINESS.

Complaints have been received by the Marton Rehabilitation Committee that, returned servicemen are unable io procure blankets. The secretary, Mr. E. Eves, said yesterday tnat from enquiries made from local firms, it had been confirmed that practically 100 per cent, of the blankets received from the manufacturers were being reserved for orders from servicemen.

MARTON WINS Y.F.C. DEBATE The first debate in the Wanganui district debating contest, organised by the young farmers was held in the Coionaiion Hall, Marton, last Monday, between teams from the Marton and Bulls clubs. The subject was “That Fanning is a way of life rather than a business,” and was supported by the Bulls club, Messrs P. Anderson, R. I. Jamieson and G. Bowen. The contest was very close, the Marton team, comprising Messrs M. F. Grey, G. E. Gordon and W. B. Gray, winning by five points. The judge, Mr. S. G. Laurenson, gave a veiy good criticism of the debate and gave the speakers many useful hints. Mr. A. L. Vile, chairman of the Marton Club, was in the chair.

Tiie final will be at. Hunterville between Marion and Mangaweka clubs. The subject, chosen is “That seconaary industries could be developed in New Zealand with advantage to e country as a whole.” The draw has yet to be fixed.

As far as the junior debating contest was concerned, it was reported at a recent meeting of the Marton Y.F.C. that Bulls was having difficulty in fielding a team to meet Marton.

The club decided to forward the following remit to the District Committee: “That the Marton club considers that the District Committee should appoint definite dates for interciub debates and any club unable to fulfil this should lose the contest by default. Continual postponement of debates is most discouraging to members, especially juniors, and the club further suggests that each team should always include one reserve, in the event of any member pulling out.” HOCKEY UMPIRES FOR TO-DAY. Flight-Lieutenant Bruce Beechey, while serving with the R.N.Z.A.F. overseas, has died of natural causes, according to a signal received by the Air Department, Wellington. F/L Beechey was a son of Mr. C. S. Beechey, a former manager of the Bank of N.S.W., Marton, and secreretary of the Rangitikei Cricket Association.

Mrs. M. Simpson, Wanganui, president of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association, ws; a visitor to Marton on Thursday night and gave an address to the Rangitikei umpires on the rules of hockey, at the same time giving an interpretation of each rule. The address was given mainly to assist hockey players and umpires, in pre/aration for their examination to be held in Marton on Monday nigh'.. Some 30 will be sitting at the Victory Hall. Mr. S. G. Avery, Bulls, at a recent meeting of the Marton Young Farmers’ Club, was congratulated upon being elected Dominion president of the movement for the current year.

Miss E. Nash, of the Marton Telephone Exchange, leav.es to-day on transfer to the Wellington exchange. Mrs. T. G. Harpur tend >.l her resignation as a vice-president of Jhe Marton Plunket Society at a recent meeting of the committee, owing to her departure from Marton shortly. Members expressed deep appreciation of Mrs. Harpur’s long service and constant help. It was stated that Mrs. Harpur had been a member of the committee since 1920, and a vicepresident since 1925.
