BASHERS AND THUGS WILL BE FLOGGED
NS W- JUDGE’S WARNING MORE ARMS SURRENDERED Recd. 8.35 p.m. Sydney, July 19. A warning that he would order the flogging of men convicted of bashing and thuggery were given by Mr. Justice Markell in the Quarter Sessions to-day. “I have very strong views on sentences that should be passed for crimes of violence, and will punish the offenders with the utmost rigor of the law,” he declared. “It is very hard if decent citizens cannot go about the streets without being bashed, or having pepper thrown in their eyes.” Determination to impose heavier sentences for crimes of violence have been expressed recently by Justices Stacy and Nield. The latest police appeal for surrender of firearms has resulted in about 700 being handed in. The weapons dated from the Boer War, but a large percentage were the standard weapons of both sides in the late war. They included two light machineguns, both Japanese, and dozens of sub-machineguns, including American Risings and Thompsons, Japanese and German Schmeissers and British Stens.
