TO-MORROWS RUGBY

TWO LEADING TEAMS MEET AT KAKARKI The principal Rugby attract ion in Rangitikei to-morrow will be the game at Kakariki between Hirnterville and Rangatahi seniors, the leading teams in the competition. Last time these teams met Hunterville was victorious by seven points to nil. At Marton the two local senior teams will be in action and Athletic, fresh from their great victory over Hunterville last week, and very keen to wipe out. the defeat suffered at the hands of Marton in the first round. The score was 6-3. Ohingaiti have to make Ihe long journey to play Bulls on the latter’s Domain. The curtain-raiser on Marton Park is being provided by the Marton and Rangatahi juniors, while Athletic travel to Hunterville to supply the main Rugby attraction in that centre for the afternoon. Two third grade matches are set down for decision on the cricket ground, the early encounter being between A.T.C. and M.D.H.S. and the second game between Marton and Bulls. Flock House will have as visitors the Rata team, and this completes the football programme for the afternoon in Rangitikei. Teams to hand re:

RANGITIKEI MAORIS BEAT TAIHAPE

The Rangitikei Rugby Maori representatives were successful in their challenge match for the Whenuaroa Shield against Taihape, at Taihape, on Wednesday, winning the match by 11 points to 6. It was a hard game, punctuated by frequent bright, passing bouts. N. Williams and E. Ashton scored tries for the visitors, Ashton converting his own try. F. Kumeroa drop-kicked a goal from a penalty. Taihape’s points came from a try by D. McCarthy and a penalty goal by P. Hekenui.

F. Kumeroa was the best Rangitikei player. His work at half-back enabled the backs to initiate many bright movements. D. McCarthy, Taihape centre, was the pick of the home side. J. Potaka was well watched by Taihape and had little opportunity to show his form. JET PLANE OVER TOWN The appearance of lhe Gloster Meteor jet-propelled aircraft over Marton this week created considerable interest. The peculiar roar of the two jet engines soon had Broadway tilled with office staffs, shoppers and shop assistants. While it did several circuits of tbe-town on Tuesday and Wednesday, its visit was of short duration yesterday, and by the time most people had made their way into the streets the plane was fast disappearing to the south. This aircraft, fresh from a demonstration tour of New Zealand airfields, is now based at Ohakea, where a number of pilots will receive conversion training of the new type of machine. TO-MORROW’S HOCKEY The Rangitikei ladies’ hockey championship will be advanced a further stage to-morrow. With a trip to Christchurch for the Dominion tournament al the end of August, the girls are all keen 1o show their best form and wi n the selectors' approval for the representative team. The meeting of United avid Hunterville on Marton Park is expected to be an interesting tussle to-morrow. The complete fixtures are:— United v. Hunterville, al Marton; Bulls v. Arrangements are being made lor the Chenille team to visit Hunterville to play a team from that, town in a friendly game. The association is hopeful that. Hunterville will enter a team in the competition, and for lhe purpose of creating interest in lhe district it has been decided to send the Chenille team. Should the Chenille .learn go Io Hunterville. the B grade match between Broadway and Chenille will be postponed and a friendly game arranged between the two Broadway teams and players drawn from other clubs.
