THE HILL OF PILGRIMAGE
THE Wanganui Public Library issued 6.1.448 books to adults during the quarter ended June 30. This means about 20,000 books a month or 1000 books a day. Assuming that each subscribi i lakes two books on an average at each call, there are .>OO individuals walking up the hill 1o the public library cm each ol the five working days of the week-. They pass the Museum building, where it is almost an event to see anyone entering or emerging. Why continue this tremendous waste of human cliort ’ When the library building was being contemplated the Wanganui East tram ran down Guyton Street and many people alighted at the Campbell Street corner and had a fairly easy grade tn the library. To-day the traffic is com-inl rat cd in Victoria Avenue and the tendency is for people to alight Iron) the Iranis at Maria Place and walk up the face of Queen's Park hill. Thus they pass the Museum on their way. The silo originally chosen for the library was al tlm rear ol ilie museum, but us difficulties were encountered in securing inundations for the museum structure tlm hilltop sile was decided on for the library. This was sound reasoning. There is no need to criticise tlm decision, but there is good reason tor reviewing it.
