SCHOOL GROUND MAINTENANCE

A 15 per cent, increase in the amount that may be spent from the maintenance account on school grounds has been approved by the Minister of Education, the Wanganui Education Board was advised yesterday. A warning that even with this increase care must be taken to see that the amount was not overspent, was given by the secretary, Mr. Geo. N. Boulton’ The board would have £lBOO to spend, of which £1250 had already been accounted for, leaving £550. The programme of repairing asphalt in the spring and winter months would easily account for this sum, he added.

The increase would not mean that more money would be available, but that a greater percentage of the maintenance account could be used for ground work, while expenditure for other work would be correspondingly lessened.

The first application under this policy was from the Waitohi School Committee to meet the cost of material for erecting a temporary fence to protect, hedge plants on the boundary. This application was approved.
