PIG PRODUCTION FIELD DAY AT PATEA

TOMOANA COMPETITION Patea, July 12. Pig prorucers from all parts of the Taranaki province, at the invitation of W. and R. Fletcher (N.Z.) xJM.. sponsors of the Tomoana baconer and porker competition which is being conducted in three groups centred upon Hastings, Patea and West field, took part in a largely attended field day al the Patea freezing works yesterday. Previously this annual competition was confined to baconers, but this winter it was extended to include a division for porkers with the ooject of demonstrating that ’ New Zealand can produce both porkers and baconers suitable for the requirements of the British market. There were special classes in both divisions for returned servicemen and members of young farmers’ clubs.

Rounds of applause were accorded Mr. E. R. Musker, of Uriti, when he was the after-luncheon recipient of prizes aggregating £55 of £145 allocated to Taranaki. He gained first and seventh places in the baconer contest, first in the porker contest, the Taranaki District Pig Councils prize for porkers and a Tomoana special prize for his combined baconer and porker team. Mr. Musker, who raises a Large White Berkshire cross grazed on open pasture and fed on skim-milk and meatmeal, was modest in acknowledging this tribute from some 400 fellow p.g-raisers. claiming chat his son “did all the work’’ and was responsible for the success achieved. Prizes on Patea judging carried out by Messrs. F. Merritt (supervisor and grader for the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, Auckland), J. Anderson (supervisor and grader for W. and R. Fletcher Ltd., Westfield) and C. H. M. Sorenson (district supervisor, Auckland, lately of Taranaki) with the assistance oi assxia'e judge!’ Messrs. D. Smith, J. Barr and L. hansen, were as follow, the winning carcases to compete with the winning Hastings and Westfield group winners in the grand championship at Auckland next Monday:— Baconer competition: D- S.
