GRATUITY MONEY
IT MAY BE DRAWN AND DISCOUNT OBTAINED REGULATIONS EXPLAINED. (P.A.) Christchurch, April 22. The acting Minister of Finance, Mr Sullivan, in. a statement to-day, said that those ex-servicemcn and exservicewomen who desire to use the whole, or portion of moneys in their gratuity account for any of the purposes named in regulation 10 of the War Service Gratuities Emergency Regulations, 1945, and thus obtain the nenefit of the 5 per cent, discount which is available under the regulations, may now do so. “It will be recalled,” said the Minister, “that the regulations pi ovide for a discount of 5 per cent, to be paid on behalf of the depositor, where part, or all, of the money in a war gratuity post, office savings bank account is, with the consent of the Minister of Defence, applied to certain purposes for the benefit of the depositor. These purposes, as set out in the regulations, are: (a) For the purpose of purchasing a house or furniture, or any other real or personal property for the investor. (b) For the purpo e of establishing the investor in any business, profession, trade or occupation. z (c) For any other purpose approved by the Minister. “Persons tn whom payments will be made will be either Government departments, or firms and individuals, and arrangements have been made for each department to deal with its own cases, and for the Rehabilitation Department to deal with those cares where payment is to be made to a firm or individual.’ The Minister pointed out that the effect of the regulation is to enable a debt, of, say, £lOO, to be discharged by authorising the withdrawal of £95 from lhe gratuity account, and, at the same time, applying for the remaining £5 to be paid out of the War Expenses Account. Any ex-serviceman or ex-servicewoman, who wishes to take advantage of the discount concession, should, therefore, apply to the department concerned, where the amount to be paid is due tc the Government. If, on the other hand, the debt to be discharged has been incurred with a firm, or individual, application should be made to the nearest office of lhe Rehabilitation Department.
