Labour Party will be .held io the Druids’ Hall to-night (Thursde; at 7.30 p.m. A NOVEL EXPERIMENT REMOVING NOXIOUS WEEDS A Rangitikei County Council experiment in removing noxious weeds is proving successful, and is providing a healthy working holiday for a school teacher and three students from Otago University. The men were provided with a 15foot keel boat by the council, and were taken to Ptikeokahu, a point on the Rangitikei River a few miles north-east of Taihape. There have been many noxious weeds growing in the river' bed, and on Crown lands bounding the river, and the men have been clearing gorse, broom, sweet oriar, blackberry, and hemlock, explained the county engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair, to-day. The party started work in December, and hopes to finish by the end of February. Because there was too much water in the river, making conditions ihrough nairow gorges dangerous, the men could not use their boat for the first 10 miles, but travelled overland along the banks, carrying their pack.’, and the boat was taken on a lorry by road and launched further down stream.

The party has suffered bad luck In the early stages of its work. One member'was poisoned and has had io leave the job, another sprained a wrist, and a third was struck by a stone falling from a cliff. The latter two were off work for some days, but have now returned to the job. The partv hopes to travel and work as far down stream as Uliku. MARTON HORTICULTURAL SHOW Arrangements are well in hand lor the Horticultural Show, to be held in (he Vctory Hall on Tuesday, February 20. In the gladioli esetion there are open, amateur, and novice classes. Oilier sections are for dahlias, hyirangeas, cut Howers, decorative, children’s exhibits, vegetables, and fruit. Schedules may be obtained from Mr. Frank Nicol or Mr. Alan Gibson, Ma.’.on. PAIRS BOWLING TOURNEY Sixteen members of the Matron Bowling Club participated 'in a pairs .ourney on Tue.day under adverse .. anther conditions. Four games were Hayed, and H. Raynes was successful m winning the skips’ section, and A. J. Petrie the leads, with four wins RED CROSS HEADQUARTERS . The Marton Sub-centre Red Cross Society has vacated its wartime headquarters in ihe old school building in High Street, and has tran-ferred its equipment to premises formerly occupied by the late Mr. Lyons in Higii Street.
