PROLONGED DROUGHT
SEVERE ON DAIRYING IN THE NORTH AUCKLAND MILK SUPPLY SERIOUSLY AFFECTED (E.A.) Auckland, Jan. 23. As a result of the prolonged drought conditions the Auckland milk supj>ly position is considered to be the worst lor oyer 20 years. With milk production for the major city and suburban supplies falling at an estimated rate of at least 300 gallons a (lav the present situation and future outlmk were stated to be the worst since lhe severe drought of 1919.
Discussing the future outlook, members of the industry agreed that the position in the coming winter was likely- to be most serious. Very little hay han been cut, and farmers were already feeding out ensilage to stock. Even if heavy rain, followed by most favourable conditions for growth, was soon experienced the position could scarcely be completely retrieved.
Farm lands adjacent to Auckland are showing the effect of drought conditiors as plainly as any district in the province. Over a wide area around the city the grass lands all have the same p irelied and lifeless appearance, and farmers tell the same story of abnormal falls in milk production, shortages of supplementary feed and anxiet.- for months ahead. They agree that this January is one of the most severe in dairying history. /'
