KING’S MESSAGE
i Recd. 6 p.m. London, May 27. i The King has sent the following message to General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson, Supreme Allied Commander in lhe Mediterranean: “Will you please convey to General Alexander and all under his command my heartfelt congratulations on the notable successes they are achieving in what we all know to be an exceptionally difficult and hard-fought action. I | pray that those successes may continue until the enemy forces in Italy are finally overwhelmed.”—B.O.W. brought in. They immediately clamoured for food and water, declaring they had had n.'dier for three days, but their truculent bearing was hardly that of men in dire straits of starvation. “The Germans abandoned a field I hospital during their withdrawal along j the Cori-Valmontone Road, which is a |veritable graveyard of Nazi eqttipiment. Burnt-out tanks, lorries and Overturned guns are strewn on both •sides of the road. This is a tribute Io llhe excellent work of our fighterbombers. which have strafed and I bombed withdrawing Nazi convoys. Of 1 12 Tiger tanks over half seemed to I have been set on lire bv the crews ibefore they were abandoi ?d, as they I bore no signs of having been shot up. !One huge 150-millimetre ield piece [was among the abandoned artillery.”
