MR. T. S. RUSSELL TOPS CITY COUNCIL POLL

Highlight of the election for the Wanganui City Council was the solid support given to Citizens’ Association candidates, six of whom headed the list of 12 councillors required. Mr. T. S. Russell, a sitting member, with 5787 votes, tops the poll on the provisional count, and the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. J. Scott (Labour) is 13th on the list, losing his seat. Eight Citizens and four Labour candidates were successful. Four new councillors, three Citizens and one Labour, have been elected. Two Labour councillors, Messrs. Scott and W. Searle, lost their seats. New councillors are Messrs. A. R. Donaldson (Citizens), A. J. Pritchard (Citizens), W. S. N. Rennie (Citizens), and J. C. Batt (Labour). The only woman candidate for the City Council, Mrs. K. Gould (Labour), were unsuccessful. Mr. E. W. Merewether (Citizens), who headed the list of successful candidates in 1941, is second on this occasion. Two of the new councillors, Messrs.
