OBITUARY
SIR WALTER CLIFFORD (P.A.) Christchurch. May 26. The death occurred to-dav of Sir Walter Lovelace Clifford. The heir to the baronetcy is the Rew Father Lewis Clifford. S.J., Sir Walter’s nephew, who is at present serving as a chaplain with the British Army in the Middle East. The next heir Io lhe title is Father Clifford’s brother. Mr. Roger Clifford, formerly of Christchurch. and now of Wainu’.urau. Sir Waller Cliffcrd celebrated bis 91st birthday on Mav 20. lie was 85 when he succeeded his nephew, the Irte Sir Charles Clifford, in 1938. Sir [Walter, who was a civil engineer by profession, was horn in Wellington and educated at Beaumont College, England. H° was an engineer of the particular?' <lillic” i .t section of the Midland railway line beyond Spring- [ field. On lhe death of his father he became pari owner of Flaxbourne Station, with which his family had been so long associat d. He managed it with success unlil the greater part of it was acquired by lhe Government for closer settlement. Sir Walter was a nv mber of the Canterbury Jockev Club for more than 50 years, and a member of the committee from 1920 to the time of his death. He raced horses many years ago, but nad not figured as an owner for a long time. His wife died before Sir Walter succeeded to the baronetcy. There were three daughters Mrs. W.
