RAT MENACE IN WANGANUI
A MARKED INCREASE Because little or no attempt Is being made by some shopkeepers .n Wanganui to combat the nuisance, the number of rals in the city has increased in recent weeks and is causing concern. Cases have been reported where stocks of goods, particularly of food varieties, have been damaged becaus*' of the rat pest. The public is urged by the authorities not to leave scraps of food about, and to take every precaution to counter any increase in the rat menace. The Health Department advises residents not to under-estimate the nuisance. Rats do an enormous amount of damage. in addition to carrying infection. All food and waste should be placed in rat-proof containers and all rubbish removed from yards. A citv official stated yesterday that there were many good rat poisons on the market, and that phosphorene noisons had been proved very effective. He said that shopkeepers who are not taking adequate precautions against rates’are committing a breach of the Health Act, 1920. It is not permissible to allow conditions to develop which will permit rats to thrive.
