TOYED WITH PISTOL
AND SHOT BOY DEAD Captain Anthony Vernon Glen Neale, aged 23, of the Royal Artillery, was said at Newcastle Assizes to have been playing with his service pistol near an upstairs window at Warkworth, Northumebrland. and pulled thx» trigger. Ihe pistol went off and the bullet killed 11-year-old William Young, who was riding past on a cycle. , Captain Neale was bound over for a year on a charge of manslaughter and ordered to pay costs not exceeding £5O. Mr. Justice Cassels told him: “By your blameworthy omission to see that the pistol was unloaded the boy lost his life. “I know what your feelings must be, but never forget it was you? negligence which killed him.” The judge hoped that by not sending him to prison Neale would retain his commission. Neale had pleaded not guilty. He said he was playing with the pistol and vlls confident it was unloaded. But he did not examine it to make sure.
