"SPRING OFFENSIVE”

NATIONAL SAVINGS During the course of the “Spring Offensive on the Home Front” Wellington has lead the other seventeen postal districts twice and Christchurch once. The results for last week just released by the chairman of the New Zealand National Savings Committee, Mr. T. N. Smallwood, place the Christchurch district again in first place with the highest percentage of National Savings accounts used, not only for last week but also for any week in the whole campaign. Auckland, which has already held second and third places, is again second and in addition, for the fourth successive week has the largest number of new accounts opened, 397. Detailed results, excluding unallocated deposits from special savings groups, are as follows:

The return for Thames has not yet been received. Results generally were much higher last week, other figures for which, with the previous week’s figures in brackets, are: Amount deposited, £66,092 (£53,477); number of deposits, 90,698 (73,477); New National Savings accounts opened, 1290 (1017). WANGANUI’S POSITION GREATER EFFORT NEEDED THIS WEEK At the close of the fourth week of the “Spring Offensive” campaign Wanganui slipped back from ninth to twelfth position on the list of postal districts of the Dominion. The number of deposits for the week, however, totalled 2835, |epresenting 19.5 per cent, of the *4,536 accounts opened in the district. This figure shows an increase of 4.5 per cent, on the previous week’s effort. Had a further 2 per cent, of Wanganui's depositors played a part in the offensive the district would have risen to seventh on the list. An analysis of the for the week shows that 2048 deposits were made to the 7310 accounts opened in the city and suburban area, while only 785 investments were made at country offices, representing a very discouraging response of 10.8 per cent, of the 7266 accounts opened in that area. The final week for the “offensive” is now in progress and the National Savings Committee makes a strong appeal to every citizen holding a National Savings investment account to make a deposit, however small, to his account this week to give an impetus to the district’s effort. ,
