OBITUARY
MR. GEORGE HIGGOTT Mr. George Higgott, Auckland, who died recently at the age of 70, arrived in New Zealand from England with his parents in 1876. He became well known in musical circles in Auckland, being the possessor of a good bass voice. He is survived by his wife, a son anjl two daughters. There are seven grandchildren. MRS. MARGARET MUIR The death has occurred at Pokeno of Mrs. Margaret Muir, aged 94. Born in Morayshire, Scotland, she arrived at Port Chalmers with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. William Douglas, by the ship Christina McAusland in 1871, and the family established itself at Pokeno. Two years later she married the late Mr. David Muir. After spending three years at the Thames Mr. and Mrs. Muir acquired land on Pokeno Hill. Mrs. Muir is survived by three sons and five daughters. MR. T. B. BAX The death has occurred in Hastings of Mr. Thomas Butler Bax, formerly known throughout New Zealand for his club-swinging records. Mr. Bax was born in London more than 87 years ago. As a youth he went to sea, taking part in a South American revolution. He left New Zealand with the Ninth Contingent for the South African War, and was a member of the New Zealand Camel Corps in Palestine in the last war, gaining the rank of captain. He was a noted clubswinger, and in Napier 30 years ago he set up a world record by swinging the clubs for 148 hours. This record has not since been broken. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. C. Coker, Wairoa, and one son, Mr. F. Bak, Auckland. MR. A. J. M. GOODWIN The death occurred suddenly on Saturday of Mr. A. J. M. Goodwin, manger of the Palmerston North branch of the Bank of New South Wales. Mr. Goodwin had served the bank for 46 years, and was due to retire next year. He spent the major part of his service in Australia and came to New Zealand about 11 years ago. After serving for a short period in the inspector’s office in Wellington he was transferred to Palmerston North. Mr. Goodwin is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mesdames C. Coleman (Auckland), and Paul (Wellington), and a son, Mr. Russell Goodwin, who is in camp.
