A very pleasant and informal evening was spent recently at the home of Mrs. L. Hancox, Raetihi, when the staff of the electricity department of the Raetihi Borough Council and their wives and families gathered to bid farewell to Miss Norma Journeaux, on the eve of her departure for Christchurch, where she will commence her training as a nurse. Games and competitions were the order of the evening, with recitations by Lorraine Hancox and Miss D. Giddy. After the serving of a dainty supper, Mr. Hancox spoke on behalf of the company and presented the guest of the evening with a crystal vase as a
token of affection and esteem from those present. Lorraine Hancox then presented her with a posy of minties and asparagus fern, while the company sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” In replying, Miss Journeaux thanked everyone for their kindness and assured them that their gift I would always serve to remind her of her friends in Raetihi. “Blue Triangle” Day. The annual appeal of the Y.W.C.A. will be held to-day and in connection with this a window display kindly given by McGruer’s expresses the work and three-fold aims of the Y.W.C.A. —mental, physical, and spiritual, as an international and interdenominational movement. In several business premises there are on display very interesting photographs of the work which the Y.W.C.A. is doing in the Middle East and England, catering for needs of women engaged in war work in cities, or in lonely parts of the desert or rural England. Its policy of meeting needs as they arise leads to interesting developments such as the use of the Nile steamer Lotus, the establishment of clubs and canteens in bombed areas, and the sending of many of the New Zealand Y.W.C.A. staff to posts in Eastern countries. A shop day is also being held at the Majestic Corner today by the women’s committee.
