Annual Report. “Despite the fact that during the season the clubs found it difficult to field teams of full strength because of the calls for military service, a successful season was recorded,” stated the report. “With the ballots now calling up men to the age of 45 for service, there will again be a great drain on the association's playing strength during the next few months. This, however, should be partly offset. as it is hoped that Army teams will be participating in the association’s competitions during the coming season. “An innovation during the season was that one-day matches were played in the senior competition and this was a great success, there being many exciting finishes to matches. The one-day games were of great assistance to clubs who might have been unable to field the same team for two consecutive Saturdays. The matches were greatly enjoyed by the public, public interest again being keen. ‘ Clubs again appear to have had a successful year, with the exception that the Aramoho Club has gone into recess for the duration of the war, owing to the number of members having been called up for military service. “The management committee congratulates the Wanganui and Garrison Band Clubs on winning the senior and junior competitions respectively. “The New Zealand Cricket Council made an unsuccessful application to the Dominion Oil Fuel Controller for petrol to enable teams to travel to fulfil engagements. Then again, the travel restrictions in force at the time precluded the Taranaki and Wellington games and also the annual colts’ matches with Taranaki and Wellington being played. A match was played against Rangitikei at Wanganui, and a team from the Tank Brigade travelled to Wanganui to play a match against the association’s representatives, and thanks are due to the Collegiate authorities for making their ground available for this game. “The association extends best wishes to B. Dow and A. G. Davidson, both representative players, who are wounded, and to D. G. Barton and P. Howden (Second N.Z.E.F.) who are prisoners of war. and to W. O. Gill (R.N.Z.A.F.) who was recently severely injured in a flying accident. The association also regrets to learn that W. L. Kauter (R.N.Z.A.F.), another representative player, is missing. "For his outstanding services to the association, Mr. R. E. Cuthbertson, the retiring president, was elected a life member of the association at the last annual meeting.” The report thanks vice-presidents and supporters for their interest and assistance.
