ARMY RUGBY
SOUTH ISLAND BEAT NORTH. (P.A.) Christchurch, Sept. 27. The South v. North Island Army Rugby match was played at Lancaster Park yesterday. The ground was fast and the weather fine. South won by 21 points to 12, but the result flatters the winners, who, on many occasions, were sorely pressed. Early in the game a misunderstanding between two North backs gave Argus a chance to pot a goal. Soon afterwards, Paewai shot round the blind side of the scrum, passed to Argus, who scored. Morgan converted. Argus again scored a few minutes later. North were frequently on the attack in good passing rushes with Fury, McPhail and Donovan prominent. When one of these broke down the South forwards dribbled through anjl Sherriffs scored. At half-time South 'led by 15 points to nil. North were soon on attack in the second spell and Mills, a fast breakaway forward, snapped up in the loose and scored for Passmore to convert. Fast work by the South forwards ended when Sherriffs dashed over near the corner. Splendid passing by Donnelly, Fury, McPhail and Donovan saw Donovan tackled in possession. He lost the ball, but McPhail scored. Trevathan kicked a penalty goal for South, but after loose play in North territory Donovan potted a goal. South owed its victory to better packing and hunting by the forwards, hut North were definitely superior in the backs. Donovan created a fine impression.
