VICE-REGAL The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall returned to Wellington from the Hawke’s Bay district last evening.—(Press Association). Rev. Father C. J. Outtrim was reelected patron, and Mr. E. Manley president, at the annual meeting of the Marist Cricket Club last night. Mr. W. R. McElwain has been elected chairman of the Boaro of Managers of the Wanganui Technical College. Mr. R. Farley, who has been elected local bodies’ representative on the Board of Managers of the Wanganui Technical College, was welcomed at the monthly meeting this week. Mr. F. Haywood has been re-elected president oi the Aramoho Boating Club. The Rev. J. H. Datson, seconding a motion of thanks to Mr. Haywood at the annual meeting, referred to the goodwill which existed between the president and members ot the club. His continued re-election was a tribute to his popularity. Doctor Frederick William Hilgendorf, Director of the Wheat Research Institute and formerly Professor of Agricultural Botany at Canterbury University College, Dincoin, died suddenly in Wellington on Wednesday evening, aged 68. He was born in Otago and educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and the Otago University College, completing his studies at the Auckland University College, where he graduated M.A. with honours in 1897. —(Press Association). A well-known Rangiora resident, Mr. William Edward Barton, died recently at the home of his brother at Redciiffs. He was 83 years of age. Mr. barton was born in England and was educated at Winchester. When quite young he came to New Zealand and settled in Wanganui, where he joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand. He was later transferred to the Bank at Kaikoura and on December 4, 19U6, became manager of the Rangiora branch. After 14 years’ service he retired and continued to live in Rangiora. The death is reported of Mr. R. M. Somerville, a former Mayor ol Te Kuiti. Born at Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin, in 1878, he farmed at Milton, Hawke's Bay, Te Kumi, and Te Kuiti. Mr. Somerville was Mayor of Te Kuiti from 1915 to 1917, was a justice of the Peace, and was district coroner lor about 20 years. He was a foundation member of the A. and P. Association, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, a chairman ot directors of the Te Kuiti Co-operative Dairy Company before its dissolution, and a director of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, in Mamilton.
