NEARING CAPITAL

BRITISH IN MADAGASCAR ADVANCE OF INVADING FORCES Rugby, Sept. 22. The British forces in Madagascar are now 19 miles from the capital, Antananarivo. Considerable damage lias been done by road blocking and the destruction of bridges, which is bound to hinder trade even w'hen the occupation is complete. It is emphasised in London that the unfortunate inhabitants have clearly been the dupes of a few civil and military officials, who have advocated the destruction at the dictation of Vichy. A Vichy cemmunique from Madagascar states that th? British column advancing towards Antananarivo from Majunga met with strong resistance 19 miles from the capital, and lighting continues. British planes had made several attacks on the railway line to Antisirane, south of the capital.— 8.0.W.
