CAUSE OF TAIHAPE FIRE

SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION Spontaneous combustion was given as the cause of an outbreak of fire which destroyed the boiler house of the Taihape Hospital early last Tuesday morning. Reporting to the Wanganui Hos- ■ pital Board at its monthly meeting yesterday, the engineer, Mr. Martin • Smith (Wanganuii stated that the 1 lire started in the wooden coal hunkers. The usual precautions were taken on the previous night, but he had previously advocated that the wooden bunkers should be replaced by concrete. About 20 tons of coal were in the bunkers, but most of it was saved. A large .stock of valuable equipment was i also salvaged. Steam was again available for the hospital at 8 o’clock that morning. The architect, Mr. C. Newton Hood, also submitted a report and it was , staled that the cost of the damage had not vet been assessed.
