SACRED HEART CONVENT

FINE DISPLAY OF WORK Parents and visitors to the Sacred Heart Convent. St. John's Hill, for the display of handwork yesterday, had the privilege of seeing an interesting exhibition of many types of arts and crafts and excellent needlework. In the various rooms specimens of handwork done by the secondary and primary classes were arranged. In the embroidery section, which was greatly admired, some outstanding needle painting was displayed. It was the work of Tresa Phelan and Joan McCashin. Mary McCashin and Dorothy Ramsey. The two first-named had Uhe honour of having their names inscribed on the shield for excellent needlework. This exhibit comprised several supper cloths, trolley covers and duchess sets, in which exquisite stitchery and delicate shading had given effective results. Next in order of merit was the needle painting of Margaret Setter, Helen Howie and Dorothy Dickie. It is always a pleasure to note the attention given at the Convent to illustrated art and literature, and this year the work is outstanding, particularly that of Erica McNamara. Specimens of art appreciation on display included the fine work of Form 4 pupils, Cushla Davis and Jean Scanlon. while good team work was accomplished in a project on Gregorian Chant, which traces the development of the dream of St. Gregor, showing how it has developed down to the present da Other talents displayed included numerous crayon pictures and oil studies, some excellent examples of paintings being the work of Madeline Janson. Margaret Haldon, Valerie Cummerford. Rachel Sievers and Rose Punch. Also on exhibition were frocks and skirts, a collection of cookery books and calendars, a new feature being figures of She fighting forces in the designs. Owing to the shortage of wool there were very few rugs this year end. instead of this work, pupils concern rated on poker work, with the result that about 150 articles were on display. the articles including a variety of nut and fruit bowls, vases. 24 stools, smokers' stands, an assortment of trinket and glove boxes, bookends, and an unusual exhibit—fire bellows. The primary classes showed frocks, embroidery and needlework, crayon drawings, papier madhe work, crepe paper pictures and marbling painting work. The display will again be on view this afternoon and evening.
