PATEA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
There was an excellent attendance at the monthly meeting of the Patea Women's Institute Mrs. A. A. Carey presiding. Mrs. Carey reminded members of the packing of unaddressed parcels at her home on Friday next. It was decided to write and thank Mr. E. C. Whitehead, who had donated six spinners complete with treadles. The twenty-first anniversary of the Women’s Institute falls in February. 1942. and. all over New Zealand branches will hold commemoration. The speaker for the afternoon was Dr. Logan, who arrived in New Zealand a year ago from England. Dr. Logan said she was a member of the W.I. and belonged to three branches. Meetings were run on much the same lines as in New- Zealand, but due to the war Womens Institutes were being entrusted with special tasks. Dr. Logan spoke of a meeting in London in 1939. of the Country Women of the World, when representatives from all over the world were present. It was most noticeable, she said, that when the German delegates spoke, they were accorded great attention and applause, almost as if the other women 'f the world were saying to Germany: "We want to be friends if you will let us." During the afternoon Mrs. Guy Corbett sang several solos. The town competition was won by Mrs. A. Gillon. The winners of other competitions were:—Christmas novelty. Mrs. Carey 1 and 2; vase of sweet peas. Mrs. S. Gunn 1, Mrs. White 2; salad. Mrs. Kelly 1. Mrs. Honeyfield 3: best bloom Mrs. L. T. Adams 1. Mrs. Henderson 2. Mrs. Erickson 3.
