MARTON SCHOOL HIGHLY GRADED

TEACHZRS PROMOTED MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Marton District High School has now reached its highest grade and the headmaster (Mr. A. \V. Tucker), the senior assistant (Mr. M. C. Amadio) and the infant mistress (Miss V. Nicol) have received promotions. The services of Miss D. Witton. however. are being lost. This information was given at the monthly meeting of the Marton District High School Committee on Tuesday night. Mr. Tucker explained that it was the result of an increase in the attendance role that the school had gone up a grade. The headmaster and staff were congratulated on the high standard attained. and as this was the last meeting of the year, the committee extended 1o the staff and headmaster the compliments of the season. The deputy-chairman Mr. A. Gracie presided over Messrs. H. Y. Cameron. D. Conway. G. Grey, W. G. Winchcombe, C. W. Preece. L. Williams, G. C. Thomas (secretary) and Mr. A. W. Tucker (headmaster). An apology was received from the chairman. Mr. J. F. R. Wallace, who was detained late in Wanganui on education business. In the event of the Marton Racecourse being urgently required for military or any other purposes Mr. Norman Hyde, secretary of the Marton Christian Convention, made application for the use of the two school buildings, including the manual instruction and cooking rooms, for the annual convention. Io he held at Easter. Guided by the headmaster’s remarks, the committee decided to grant the convention the use of the primary department only, the secretary to be advised that adequate cooking facilities can be installed in this building. Congratulations were extended the headmaster and staff on the exhibition of work at the school on Tuesday. “The exhibition is deserving of the highest praise.” said Mr. Gracie. The neatness and the excellent appearance of the school grounds was referred to by Mr. Winchcombe, a member of the visiting committee. A tribute to the efficiency of the caretaker Mr. S. A. Wilson, was paid by Mr. Tucker, who added that was through his efforts that the grounds were looking in such perfect order. In recognition of his services. Mr. Wilson was voted a bonus. No written report was submitted by the headmaster, but in a verbal statement he said the attendance was most unsatisfactory. He invited the committee to the school concert to bp held next Tuesday and the breaking-un ceremonv on Friday. December 19. when Mr. E. B. Gordon. M.P.. will address tbe ehildren. Messrs. Preece and Cameron were appointed a visiting committee for the current month. Christmas greetings were received from Lieutenant B. Kendrick, a former member of the teaching staff, now serving in the forces overseas.
