WHO IS “JOHN”?
A WIRELESS MYSTERY POSSIBLE BRITISH AGENT Who is "John,” who has gained wide publicity in the prelude to the 8.45 a.m. news broadcast from London in the South African service twice this week. Before reading the news, the announcer made this statement: "Here is a message for John. We are expecting news of you between the 19th. and 20th. of this month.”
Such messages for the benefit of British agents are not unknown in broadcasts from the 8.8. C. Recently, for instance, the following message was twice broadcast in French to a mysterious saboteur on the Continent: “Here’s a message for our corres- [ pondent Leopold Vindictive 200, we | repeat. Leopold Vindictive 200. We i appreciate your valuable and voiumi nous efforts. Heartiest congratu- ; lations and long live the V’s. Atten- | tion! Keys turn in the lock, but for the affair of 300 square metres it is I necessary to wait yet a few days. For all concerning A. all is of the greatest importance. Watch your step southeast of 82.- Long live the brave V’s I of Lille and of Nieuport."
