"LAST DISCOUNT” DAY
WANGANUI CITY COUNCIL’S RATE DEMANDS
MORE THAN HALF TOTAL HAS BEEN PAID
With the payment over the counter at 'the City Council offices yesterday of approximately £12.300. following on £21,819 2s 4d on Wednesday, the total of the 1941-42 rate levy paid amounts tc £74,740. Yesterday was the last day on which a discount of 4d in the £ on rates was allowed, and probably by the time that accounts are balanced it will be found that the amount paid will top the £75,000 mark, thus establishing a new “high” for the city. The amount of rates struck for the current financial year was £132.820. compared with £130,025 last year. Twelve months ago £59,359 remained unpaid after the discount day had passed, but the current year’s figures, in spi<e of the higher amount budgeted for, is an improvement to the extent of more than £l2OO, only £58,080 remaining unpaid by last night. An increased levy by the Wanganui Hospital Board and the Wanganui Fire Board necessitated an increase of 2.15 per cent, in the current year's rate.
