CHARGE OF DESERTION
GUNNER PLEADS NOT GUILTY (Press Assn.) Auckland, Sept. 18. A plea of not guilty was made by Gunner Joseph Murray, aged 27, when charged at a court-martial in Devonport to-day with deserting from the forces in that on May 18 he absented himself from his unit until apprehended by the police on August 29, wnen he was wearing civilian clothes. For accused, it was stated that he volunteered for overseas service at the beginning of the war, but was put in Class 11. He married after May 1. 1940, and was called up as a single man and posted to the Sixtysecond Battery. After serving three days he was admitted to hospital and while there learnt that his wife was expecting a child. On his discharge from hospital he chose his duties as a husband in preference to those of soldier. He said he did not desert but was merely absent without leave. After his punishment he desired to straighten out his family affairs and then return to his duties. The finding of the Court will be promulgated.
