HUNGER STRIKE ENDED

TWO INTERNEES IN AUSTRALIA HOPEFUL OF RELEASE (Recd. 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, July 20. After seventeen days without food, Horace Ratliff and Max Thomas ended a hunger strike last night. The National Security Advisory Committee concluded a two-days’ hearing of the men’s case in a ward of the hospital. It will probably report its finding to the Army Minister, Mr. P. C. Spender, on Monday. Ratliff and Thomas were so hopeful that the finding would be favourable that they broke their fast to build up strength to take advantage of an expected release order. The men told the tribunal they would support Australia's war effort, but refused to acknowledge that their internment was either justified or justly executed. —U.P.A.
