THE ONLY MATERIAL INFORMATION

HEAVY FIGHTING, HEAVY LOSSES FOUR WEEKS OF WAR (Recd. 6.30 p.m.) Rugby, July 19. The statement this morning in a Russian communique, that heavy fighting continues in various sectors, including that of Smolensk and that “both sides suffered heavy losses,” is regarded here as the only material information available of the titanic s.ruggle which has now continued lor four weeks.

The German High Command’s claim to have captured Smolensk itself is at present treated with reserve, in view of the fact that mechanised detachments frequently reach points well in advance of supporting infantry and the Prussian defensive tactics have already been known to hold up the main supporting German forces when mechanised spearheads have actually been able to penetrate long distances ahead.—U.P.A.
