BUOYANT FIGURES

AWAPUNI TOTALISATOR OVER £400,000 THIS SE.ASON The totalisator at has had a busy year, and Saturday's turnover of nearly £35,000 brought the season’s total up to well over £400,000. The Wanganui Jockey Club has enjoyed the privilege of holding six days' racing at Awapuni, and at these the aggregate of totalisator investments was £l4B 972. an average of nearly £25.000 a day. Seven days' racing under the auspices of the Manawatu Racing Club resulted in £211,388 being-handled, the average being more than £3O 000 a day. The Manawatu Hunt Club was the latest to hold a meeting at. the centre, and Saturday's turnover of £34,864 brings the aggregate for fourteen days' racing up to £395.224. In April the Manawatu Trotting Club held a twoday meeting, when the totalisator turnover was such as to place the season's aggregate well on the way toward the half-million mark. Saturday's turnover of £34.864 was striking evidence of the popularity of racing, though probably it would prove unpalatable for opponents of racing during war-time. Several severe reverses for hackers failed lo stem the steadily rising total of investments on Saturday, and from an opening "pool" of £1377 for the amateur riders' event and £3600 for the second race the total increased to £6700 on the concluding event. This was achieved desnite the inability ot the staff to handle all the money offering and also in spite of the defeat of five of the day's favourites.
