WAIMARINO COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING Cr. D. J. Berry presided at the monthly meeting of the Waimarino County Council. The following business was transacted: — The Te Aroha Patriotic Society appealed for support in its desire to bring pressure upon the Government to permit one appeal for funds which could be controlled locally to meet extreme and urgent cases of hardship amongst returning soldiers. The council decided not to support the request. It was of the opinion that it was neither necessary nor desirable for local appeals to be launched for the purpose. It also was of the opinion that the present provincial control and expenditure of the funds collected met all legitimate claims and obviated overlapping which would occur should local appeals be allowed.

The action of the clerk and chairman in applying for a revote for the Ohotu-Karioi metalling in connection with Public Works estimates for 194142. was approved. The district engineer, Public Works Department, Wanganui, advised that Mr. D. J. Berry had been appointed as the represen.a.tive of the council in the No. 8 Highways District Council.

The Wanganui Harbour Board advised that the harbour rate for 1941-42 had been struck and was the same as for 1940-41, viz., 8-25 d in £1.—Received.

Mr. D. D. McLean asked the council to inspect the Hukaroa Road, which the council some 18 months ago had promised to put in satisfactory order. —The matter was left to Cr. Wise and the engineer to deal with. The engineer reported that extensive damage had been done by stumping machines on the Oruakakura Road. The metal had been damaged over practically the whole section and several culvert pipes had been broken. Representations had been made to the Public Works Department with a request that the cost of reinstatement of the road be borne by the department.—The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and engineer with power to act. The chairman reported on the recent meeting of the Highways District Council and the proposed works to be carried out during the year. He had again raised the question of the Half Moon Bridge on the Pipiriki Road, and was assured that the matter would be gone on with. Provision had been made for the expenditure of a very large sum of money on the State highway Between Waiouru and Taihape, and it was considered that where money was expended purely as a mill ary need the cost of such work should come out of the Army vote, and not be a charge on the particular district in which the highway was situated. Representations were to be made accordingly. The amount provided for maintenance had been cut down considerably notwithstanding that the consumption of petrol showed practically no reduction on the previous year’s figures. No doubt a considerable quantity had been consumed on account of Army needs. —The chairman was thanked for his report.
