GLADYNEV WINS

Te Hero Handicap At Awapuni WEST COAST STEEPLES TO SON AND HEIR MANAWATU HUNT MEETING Bright sunshine and ideal wintei conditions were factors in the success of the Manawatu Hunt Club’s steeplechase meeting at Awapuni on Saturday. In addition, the club’s enterprise in catering for the steeplechasers and open hurdlers alter the cancellation of the Trentham meeting resulted in the public being provided with spien did displays in these events. The attendance far beyond the most optimistic expectations, there being practically a Boxing Day crowd. Despite all efforts the staff on the win-and-place totalisator could not handle all the moneys offering; yet the turnover for the eight races was £34,364, compared with £18,790 10s for seven races last year, the increase being £16,073 10s, or 85 per cent. These are remarkable figures, especially as there were live winners at doublefigures and several good "place” dividends. However, three “win ’ favourites were successful. The track was in excellent winter order.

Splendid Jumping. Spectacular jumping was the feature of the West Coast Steeplechase, which was won at double figures by Son and Heir, who took the lead six furlongs from home and outstayed the weli-backed Dozie Boy, with Chat, the early co-pacemaker for Lady Callaghan, six lengths back. The veteran Erination beat Lady Callaghan for fourth. Birkology, who ran in heavy bandages, broke down after going a mile and was pulled up. The Manawatu Hunt Cup Steeplechase was also marked by splendid fencing on the part of the Pukekohe trained Dauber, a decided favourite, who piloted the field throughout and won as he liked from Hyderabad, the winning margin of two lengths being just as mt\'h as his rider wanted. Beau Monde was fifty yards back. Another of The Auckland province’s representatives in The Dozer scored an easy win in the Waituna Hurdles, for which he was favourite. lie took the lead approaching the home turn and won well from the neglected Cuisinier, whose “place” suporters received a dividend of nearly a third of a century. Great Que.x was third, just a neck in front of Tidewaiter, whose finishing run from a long way back was a striking feature of the race. Segra lost his rider at the lasi hurdle. Gladynev Again. The Gayest Son-Screen Star bracket was the elect of backers in the To Horo Handicap, but there was a big surprise, for Gladynev, who had won the Manawatu Winter Cup last month, finished solidly to beat Star Zone and the early pacemakers, i Wings of Song and Poutatau, in a slashing finish. Gayest Son, rather : unlucky, was right up witfl the placed (horses. Gladynev’s win dividend was □ver a score.

Expellant, who did not appear in the original list of acceptors, won the Ohau Maiden. He was ridden by F. Cleaver, who also scored on The Dozer and Dauber. Broughton’s mount, Theatre, was second, but six lengths behind Expellant and the Trnetham-trained Te Marua was third, returning a dividend of over a score. Te Awe Awe, coupled with St. Feiicien, just missed getting in the money. Royal Jay, at double-figure odds, won the Cheltenham Hack Cup to 'make the Aucklanders’ fourth win on the day. Royal Jay ran into the leac. •in the home turn and held oft Acrobat and the unlucky Renascor, who could not get ciear till too late. The Awapuni-trained Lacan had the Kiwitea Ladies' Bracelet won half a mile from home, holding off Vengeance and Kohika in good style. H. N. Wiggins brought the Martontrained Distress Signal home at a ■irice just under a score in the concluding event, in which Halley’s sustained run from the rear was a fine effort.
