RANGITIKEI SPORT

RESULTS OF PLAY ON ; SATURDAY GLENN CUP RUGBY Fine weather prevailed in Rangitikei on Saturday for various sports fixtures. RUGBY FOOTBALL RESULTS AT A GLANCE Senior. —South 14, v. North 6. Thirds.—Old Boys 10, v. Hnnterville 6; Bulls 32, v. Flock House 0. South Have Win The first of a series of three matches was played at Hunterville on Saturday for the Glenn Cup. The area has been divided into two teams with Marton Old Boys and Bulls representing South, and Hunterville and Ohingaiti the North teams. South had a comfortable win at 14 to 6 with no points on either side during the first spell. The football, especially during the first half, was only fair, with very little team play evident. A. Duncan scored nine of South’s 14 points with two tries and a penalty kick. Dornbush also scored, and Stock converted. The referee was Mr. W. Cairncross. There will be no football in Rangilikei next Saturday, because of the races, but the following Saturday will see the South at grips with the North again for the second match, at Mar-

South are the winners of this match, a further match which has been set down to be played in Bulls will not be necessary, but if the North win, the final match will have to take place as a play-off. Old Boys Defeat Hunterville As a curtain-raiser at Hunterville, the Old Boys thirds defeated Hunterville by 10 to 6. As Bulls also won their match against Flock House, the third grade competition has ended with both Old Boys and Bulls sharing top position. A play-off will therefore be necessary. Mr. R. Baker refereed the curtain-raiser match. HARRIERS On Saturday the fourth Todd Cup race was held over the 61-mile course. This event was won by the junior harrier, F. Hooper, with J. Horgan tilling second position. There are still two more races for the Todd Cup, and to date the points for these series of races are: —C. Harper 18. F. Hill 21, B. Harper 24, K. Ellery 25, and J. Horgan 26. The result of Saturday’s race is as follows:—F. Hooper (11.45), 45.54. 1; J. Horgan (8.15), 43.09, 2; J. Mackie (3.48), 38.41, 3; J. Taylor (3.20), 38.32. 4; K. Ellery (5.45), 42.04, 5; C. Harpur (5.30). 41.50, 6; F. Hill (scr.). 37.10, 7; B. Harper (8.40), 47.59, 8; A. Fowler (14.30), 55.28, 9. After the run the harriers were again entertained to a very welcome afternoon tea. LADIES’ HOCKEY Results. —United 4, v. Rata 1; Kia Ora 6, v. Hunterville 1. United Have Comfortable Win At Rata on Saturday the United team had a comfortable win of 4 goals to 1, although thep lay was more even than the score really indicates, especially in the second half, when each side scored one goal. It is evident that United is a team that can shine in the first half, and they have to fight hard to avert a defeat in the

second half. The Rata team is almost the opposite, as they usually have a few goals scored against them during the first half, and their light back to -e--gain the lost ground in the second half, a feature which they ofter almost accomplish. For United Mrs. Hammond scored all 4 goals, while Rata's sole goal came from J. Signal. The umpires were Messrs. Smart and Gracie. Kia Ora Again Win At Marton Kia Ora had an easy win over Hunterville by 6 goals to 1. ■ The visiting team fought hard, but ! were no match for the more ex- : perienced Kia Ora players. The umpires were Mr. W. H. Coles and Miss M. Wilkie. BASKETBALL Only friendly matches were played on Saturday to fill in time before the finals and representative matches. At the present stage Rongotea are leading in the competition, with Marton holding second place with Kopane. At Bulls on Saturday Marton A played and defeated Bulls by 17 to 3. ON THE GOLF LINKS On the Marton golf links a flag competition was won by F. J. Christensen with T. C. Ward runner-up. Several games were played in the President’s Handicap on the Hawkestone golf links.
