WANGANUI EAST CLUB GRIEVE CLP FINAL. In the semi-final of the Grieve Cup E. Tippins beat A. Walker, 9-8, Final. First Life.—E. Tippins beat S. Ambrose, 9-5. Second Life.—S. Ambrose beat E. Tippins, 918. The courts were in good order. Tippins was playing well against Walker in his semi-final. The score was level, up to 6-all and then the residential champion led 8-6. Walker then started to lob and drive better and he drew 8 all. The last game went to 30-40 in Walker's favour. He had match point twice, but Tippins was too good, and ran out winner, 9-8. Tippins immediately went in to the lead against Ambrose in the final, the two playing fairly well. Tippins retained his form again and ran out an easy winner, 9-4. This gave the pair one life- each. In the final game Ambrose played better tennis than in the earlier tussle. Tippins was tiring after two strenuous games. Ambrose led in the middle of the set, but Tippins, fighting every point, led 8-6. Then Ambrose, driving harder, forced his opponent into errors, and the score read 8 all. Finally Ambrose won the cup, 9-8. He played well ana Tippins once again showed himself a thorough sportsman.
