BIG MEETING AT GONVILLE

MUNICIPAL ELECTION MR. E. B. TUSTIN’S CAMPAIGN Indicating that interest in the municipal election in Wanganui is quickening, there was a big meeting at Gonville last night Io hoar the Citizens’ candidate for tho Mayoralty, Mr. E. B. Tustin, outlining his policy. It was regarded ax lhe most enthusiastic meeting held in Gonville for a long time. Mr. Tustin again appealed for unity in the administration of civic affairs, the cessation of political bickering and the settling down to a sound, businesslike method of conducting what, after all, was the biggest business in the city. He referred to the war. the need for prompt and firm leadership and co-ordination of tho city’s war effort.

After emphasising that he was entirely independent and that he would act only as dictated to by his own judgment, Mr. Tustin said he supported a policy of economy in municipal spending, hut. only where such economy was consistent, with maintaining existing services efficiently. Other planks in his platform were the avoidance of all waste and unprofitable works, a full appreciation of tho difficulties of tho present and the need for making provision for post-war problems, and complete unity among all sections.

“If elected,” Mr. Tustin added, “I would endeavour to give a load and full support in all local efforts for the prosecution of the war.” Mr. E. W. Merewether, himself a candidate for a seat on the City Council, presided and urged support for Mr. Tustin and those who had offered themselves as citizens, and not as a partv. for office on the various local bodies.

Other speakers were Mr. G. E. Bennett, and Mr. G. I. Jones (Citizens’ candidates for the City Council). Mrs. A. K. Maclean (Citizens’ candidate for the Hospital Board). Mr. E. A. Marchant. (Citizens’ candidate for tho Harbour Board) and Mr. H C. Veitch (Citizens’ candidate for the Power Board).

Moved by Mr. E. W. Hanrahan and seconded by Mr. W. H. Bates, a vote of confidence in Mr. Tustin and all the Citizens’ candidates was carried unanimously and with great enthusiasm. MR. ROGERS’ CAMPAIGN MEETING IN KEITH STREET HALL Mr. O. Persson, chairman of the Keith Street branch of the Labour Party, presided at a meeting addressed by Mr. Rogers and ether Labour candidates in the Methodist. Hall. Keith Street, last night. There was an excellent al tendance and the speakers were well received. Mr. J. J. Scott spoke at length and was followed by other candidates for municipal and local bodies. Mr. Rogers, who had a prior engagement, was the last speaker to address the meeting. Ho spoke on the lines of previous addresses.
