MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST NIGHT’S MEETING ROUTINE BUSINESS TRANSACTED The resignation of Mrs. J. Allen, as caretaker of the Women’s Rest Room, was received and accepted at last night's meeting of the Marton Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. F. Purnell, presided. There were also present Crs. G. B. Gregory, T. Barton, A. A. Mclndoe, A. J. B. Sicely, W. B. Winchcombe, K. A. Williams, J. R. Howard, W. J. Mogridge and Mr. C. C. McDonald (town clerk). The Rangitikei County Council advised that the county has agreed to contribute the sum of £lO towards the Home Guard Headquarters expenses at Marion. The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants asked the council to consider the question of providing a footpath from the subway, French Street, to the borough boundary on Golding’s Line. The matter was referred to the works committee. Crs. Williams and Mogridge were authorised to interview the postmaster regarding the placing of seats outside the post office. Officers’ Reports, Mr. W. R. Brant (overseer), reported on general maintenance work carried out, which included a general clean-up on severer streets and the cleaning out of drains. The paths and tennis courts at the Marton District High School have been tarred, sanded, rolled and completed. The reservoir is holding 22 feet of water and the embankments are in good order. The town clerk reported that the receipts for the month were £1193 15s, including Town Hall, £153 Ils 3d; gas consumers, £325 18s 2d; rates, £ll7 0s Id; licences, £96 2s; water fees, £163 9s; gas lines and fitting, etc., £lBB 14s 7d. ported that: During the month 69

Mr. A. J. Holden, gas manager, retons 12cwt. of coal were carbonised, yielding 886,000 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,000 feet to the ton of coal carbonised. An average of 74 bags of coke to the ton of coal was obtained.
