WANGANUI A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

SCOTTISH REGIMENT TO CO-OPERATE.

A decision to combine with lhe New Zealand Scottish Regiment in staging a gymkana and military sports meeting the Wanganui Racecourse on Saturday, March 22, was reached at a special meeting of the executive committee of the Wanganui A. and P. Association recently. Major J. R. McAllister, M.C., commandant nf the camp on the racecourse, and his officers have entered into the proposal with enthusiasm, and Second-Lieutenant. B. R. Grant and Sergeants Barrance and Beddingfield, have been appointed as delegates from the regiment to act on the organising committee. J. Williams and Co. have donated a silver challenge cup, which will be a permanent trophy for annual competition by the New Zealand Scottish Regiment for inter-company sports. The first competitions will be between the Auckland and Wellington companies at the gymkana in Wanganui next month. The Williams Challenge Cup competition will include the following track events: —880 yards, 440 yards, 100 yards, inter-company relay race (800 yards, four men), and tug-of-war (inter-company eight men). In addition, the military will give a display of sentry marching and also a display of bayonet fighting. The soldiers will also compete in novelty events, such as a 5(1 yards sack race, a greasy pole event, a cockfighting championship, and an obstacle race. The gymkana programme has tentatively been arranged and includes 21 horse events, comprising several which are now to the Wanganui public, 13 amusing and instructive novelty events, a tug-of-war competition and exhibition of buck-jumping and numerous children’s events. The proceeds are to be equally divided between the N.Z. Scottish Regiment at present in camp on the racecourse and the Wanganui A. and P. Association.
