ITALIAN CONQUEST OF ABYSSINIA
BRITAIN RESERVES LIBERTY OF ACTION RECOGNITION OF HAILE SELASSIE [ British Official Wireless.J RUGBY, Aug. 13. The British Government's attitude toward the position of the Emperor of Abyssinia, Haile Selassie, and the recognition of the Italian conquest, was stated in the House of Lords by the Dominions Secretary, Lord Caldecote, who said that the Government had let it be known that in view of Italy’s act of deliberate aggression in resorting to war against Britain it felt entitled to reserve full liberty of action on any commitments entered into in the past with the Italian Government relating to the North and East African and Mediterranean areas. This declaration covered the de jure recognition under the AngloItalian agreement of 1938 of Italy's conquest of Abyssinia. He stated that the Government attached full importance to the Question of recognising Haile Selassie as the lawful ruler of Abyssinia and the possibility of giving him assistance to overthrow the Italian aggressor and reoccupy the throne.
