Potatoes on Marton Park. An offer of £lO from Mr. O. A. Dornbush, to' plant potatoes on Marton Park, was accepted by the Marton Borough Council last night.

Good Fat Stock Prices. At the Wanganui stock sale yesterday the best price so far this winter was obtained for fat cows, which were prime and good. They brought £ll. All fat stock sold well, prime ewes bringing more than 40s a head. Okoia Dairy Pay-out More than £20,000 was paid out yesterday to shareholders and suppliers of the Okoia Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd. The cheques represented the amount available for distribution after the past season’s trading had been finished. College Rugby The first fifteen of the Wanganui Collegiate School leaves to-day for day for Nelson where it will take part in the college tournament which will be played there on Saturday and Monday. Wanganui is drawn to play Christ's College on Saturday. Scottish National Concert A suggestion that a Scottish national concert be held in the Opera House on October 31, to celebrate Hallowe’en, was brought forward at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band last night. The suggestion was approved of by members, and it will be more fully considered at the next meeting of the band's executive committee. St. John Ambulance Following are the duties of the St. John Ambulance Brigade for Saturday: Spriggens Park, Sergeant H. Reardon, Privates E. Kendall, J. Bell, and R. Boesley; Racecourse, Privates F. Jenkinson, S. Fowler, and F. Brown. Members of the East Town Railway Division will attend the soccer fixtures. Members of the Gonville and Central Nursing Divisions will attend the soccer fixtures. Memorial to “Cobber” Kain. At a meeting of the Marton Borough Council last night an appreciative letter was received from Mrs. R. Kain, Wellington, thanking the council for the garden plot it had planted in commemoration of her son, the New Zealand flying ace, the late Flight-Lieutenant E. J. “Cobber” Kain, D.F.C., who was killed in an air accident in England after a distinguished record in a fighter squadron of the R.A.F. No Wet Canteen “There will be no wet canteen at the military camp on the Racecourse,” said Staff-Sergeant A. A. Greener, of the Internal Marketing Department, who arrived at Wanganui yesterday to take charge of the canteen at the camp. Staff-Sergeant Greener said there had been a great deal of talk about the establishment of wet canteens in Territorial camps and at Waiouru, but nothing was known about the proposal in Wellington. Kauri Instead of Teak It was reported to the annual meeting of the Okoia Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., held in Wanganui yesterday, by the chairman of directors, Mr. T.’e. Wilson, Waitotara, that the directors had accepted a tender to supply a new churn, which was to be made of teak. That was the wood recommended by all the experts. It was found later, however, that the Government had curtailed the importation of teak to the Dominion, and the churn had to be made of kauri. Mr. Wilson said that the inability to obtain teak had resulted in all the negotiations regarding purchase of the churn having to be gone over a second time.

No Class Exemption “There is no authority under the National Service Emergency Regulations to exempt any person or class of persons from being called up for military service.” stated the Minister of National Service, the Hon. D. Wilson, in a letter received at a meeting of the Patea County Council on Tuesday. “The question of exemption for any person called in the ballot would be a matter for determination by armed forces appeal boards, which will be set up shortly.” The letter was in reply to a question by the council whether Public Works or other classes of employees, who had not had previous farm experience, and who undertook farm work would be excluded from the ballot for military service. Offer by Y.M.C.A. An offer to provide recreation facilities for soldiers on leave, as well as for those quartered in the military camp at the Wanganui Racecourse, has been made by the Wanganui branch of the Y.M.C.A. The fact that no “home a.way from home” has been available for these soldiers has inspired the Y.M.C.A. to throw open its lounge, library and recreation rooms for the use of those on leave. The secretary, Mr. A. L. Rounthwaite, has stated that gifts of games and reading matter would be acceptable, as at present the stock in the Y.M.C.A. is rather limited. The installation of a buffet, at which refreshments will be procurable, is also being arranged, and several of the Wanganui women’s organisations have promised support.

Unveiling of Portraits. This afternoon two portraits ol former citizens of Wanganui, whose generosity has added greatly to the cultural life of the city, will be unveiled In the juvenile section of the Wanganui Public Library. The portraits are of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Alexander. It was as a result of bequests made in Mr. Alexander’s will that the Alexander Museum and Alexander Library came to be built. Both portraits, which have been done in oils, have been beautifully renovated by Mr. H. Newrick, curator at the Sarjeant Gallery. Senior pupils from ail the schools participating in the library will attend to-day’s ceremony. which will be presided over by the chairman of the library Committee of the Wanganui City Council, Cr. J. Siddells. Mr. F. C. Jannings president of the Wanganui Head Teachers’ Association, will give an address.
