GYMNASTIC DISPLAY

WANGANUI Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. PRESENTATION LAST NIGHT There was a large attendance of the public in the Wanganui Opera House last night to see the annua! gymnastic display and variety entertainment organised by the Wanganui Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. It was a pleasing spectacle and in every way successful. There were more than 200 performers and some of the balancing and physical exercising were a revelation, reflecting a keen interest not only on the part of the performers themselves, but their instructors. It is, perhaps, invidious to select from such a good programme items which called for special mention. The .balance exercises by the men, however, acrobatics by Miss P. Wells, and the formation of pyramids by the ladies were of exceptional merit. A dance and poses performed by Shirley Richards and men was also a good item. Included among those assisting the Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. were Master Thomas Little, boy soprano, Master D'Arcy Cavell, piano-accordion, Miss Shirley Richards, who presented an appealing classical dance entitled “The Fountain,” Miss Beverley Richards, and a Gipsy ballet by Miss Eva Matthews’ pupils. Mr. T. Douds, baritone, also entertained with pleasing numbers. The programme was: Overture; flag drill, primary boys; "Exercise as You Play,” physical kindergarten; "Call it Crazy if You Like,” junior optimists; tumbling, selected juniors; song, Mr. T. Douds; wand exercises, intermediate boys; grace and rhythm, primary girls; harbour lights, secondary girls; quick sets, ladies; dance and poses, Shirley Richards and men: song, T. Little; parallel bars, men: taps, Misses Wells and Thomas; clowns, men; double wand drill, secondary girls; Gipsy ballet, Miss Matthews’ pupils; hoops, ladies; balances, men; acrobatics, Miss R. Wells; swords, ladies; piano - accordion. D'Arcy Cavell; horizontal bar, men: pyramids, ladies; finale, the whole company. “
