MANGAWEKA NOTES
FAREWELL EVENING. Members of the Third Echelon were farewelled at a social and dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday evening. The hall was packed to capacity. Each soldier was presented with a money-belt, 10s note and a pair of socks by the chairman of the Farewell Commitee, Mr. Dan Marsh. During the evening items were given by Mr. B. Harding, Mrs. H. Brewer, Mrs. E. Oates, Miss N. Mahoney and Miss Dawn Bak. Short speeches were made by the chairman of the Town Board, Mr. A. Millner, Mr. D. Marsh and, on behalf of the R.S.A., Mr. Pat Furber. Each soldier made a brief reply. An opportunity was taken during the evening to make a small presentation to Mrs. O’Dea, who is leaving Mangaweka after many years’ residence here, also to Tom O’Dea from the Centennial Committee for his valuable work during the Centennial celebrations. Mr. Pat Green also made a presentation to Private Brown on behalf of the Young Farmers’ Club. MANGAWEKA Y.F.C. MONTHLY MEETING. There was a large attendance of members at the Mangaweka Young Farmers’ Club monthly meeting, which was held on Tuesday last. Arrangements were nnallsed for the final round of the Wanganui District Debating Competition, in which Mangaweka Y.F.C. debaters will meet Marton on August 23, at Hunterville. A discussion then followed on the Mangaweka Young Farmers' 2YA radio talk, which is entitled, “The Development of Hill This is to be broadcast from T*A at 7.40 p.m. or 2YC if Parliament is being broadcast, on Tuesday, August 20. At the conclusion of business Mr. G. McDermid gave a very interesting and instructive talk on “Horse Breaking.”
