PATEA BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL (Own Correspondent) PATEA, Aug. 13. The monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held on Monday. Mr. E. F. Hemingway presided. Others present were: Crs. F. Naismith, F. McKenna. J. Bromley, C. S. Fuller-Sandys. F. Ramsbottom. Mr. L. Austin (town clerk) and Mr. J. Cunningham. Sympathy with a former councillor. Dr VV. T. Simmons, and his family, in their recent bereavement was expressed by the council. The following recommendations put forward by the Streets, Electric Light, Water and Drainage Committee were adopted: That prices be obtained from dealers for a new motor-truck for the streets department, and offers for a trade-in of the present lorry; that the contractor for the septic tank outfall job be paid for the additional distance laid as an extra; that the recommendation in the town clerk’s report re a capital reserve be given effect to. Mr. F. Ramsbottom was nominated to till a vacancy on the Patea Harbour Board caused by the resignation of Mr. F. Naismith. O. and R. Beere and Co. wrote on behalf of Patea Pictures, Ltd., agreeing to revert temporarily to the rent originally provided in the expiring lease of the Town Hall, until such time as the Loans Board agrees to the Joan for alterations. The letter also stated that in the firm’s opinion, if the reply from the Loans Board is unfavourable, the terms of the lease should be settled by the Licensing authority. The matter was referred to the Reserves Board. The Local Government Loans Board wrote granting authority of the balance of the water supply loan towards meeting part of the cost of a motor truck for the streets department. The Country Library Service wrote re participation in the free service, the matter being referred to the library committee. Cr. F. Ramsbottom was appointed council representative on the Patea Harbour Board to replace Cr. F. Naismith. who resigned. Mr. C. H. Carey wrote declining the offer of fire controller on the re-cently-formed emergency committee, as he did not now hold a head position in the fire brigade and considered the position should be taken by th£ superintendent. He thanked the council for offering him the position. Superintendent N. R. Coad was appointed. It was decided to hold a special meeting to consider the application from Mr. S. G. Cathro on behalf of Mr. C. C.
