ACCIDENT ON FARM
YOUNG MAN'S DEATH INJURIES PROBABLY CAUSED BY FALL FROM HORSE. (Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, Aug. 13. A young man, Mr. Eric Hammond, J aged 24, farm manager, Kawhatau, Mangaweka, died in the Taihape N hospital this morning, from injuries received as the result of an accident believed to have been caused as the result of his horse falling while he was riding round the ewes in hilly country. Deceased was managing a farm at Kawhatau for Mr. S. R. Thompson, and left early yesterday morning to ride round the ewes. When he did not return for lunch, as was his custom, a search was organised and he was found shortly before 5 p.m. by Mr. D. Wright, at the foot of a gully in hilly country. There was blood on the ground and it appeared that Mr. Hammond’s horse had fallen with him on a steep slope. Mr. Wright, who works on the farm managed by Mr. Hammond, saw deceased’s horse in the morning and again in the afternoon, and subsequently discovered Mr. Hammond lying on the ground in a seriously Injured condition. He was admitted to the Taihape hospital shortly after 6 p.m. and died this morning. He was well known and highly respected in the Mangaweka district, having been farm manager for Mr. Thompson for the past four years. He was a married man and leaves two young children, and was a son of Mr. C. G. Hammond, manager of Santoft station. Marton. An inquest was opened before the _ , Taihape district coroner, Mr. Loader, J.P., this afternoon.
