Troopship Magazine. Full of topical humour, lighthearted verse and brief tales of shipboard life, copies of “The Grapevine,” a magazine produced by men of the second echelon on one of the transports which took them to England, are now reaching New Zealand. The magazine, which was printed, in South Africa, contains 24 pages, the cover design depicting a large transport framed by the carved entrance to a Maori house. In a reference to the publication, the editor points out that “this voyage is a passing phase in a great adventure and ‘The Grapevine’ is a reflection of the cheerful spirit prevailing.”

Borough Complimented. Complimentary reference to the administration of the civic affairs of Hastings by the borough council were confined in a letter from a ratepayer, Mr. H. J. Grieve, to the council. His opinions are all the more noteworthy in view of the fact that rate-demand notices have recently been issued. ”1 would like sincerely to congratulate the mayor and councillors on the very excellent way the affairs of the borough are managed,” writes Mr. Grieve. ‘‘For something under 5s 6d a week, for a property with'" 10 minutes’ walk from the Post Office, it is amazing the benefits received. Why, to take the rubbish away weekly, if one had to do this, would knock a hole in 5s 6d. More power to their elbows," he concludes.
